Oral Language Week 2 Term 4

This week Kowhai kids have been learning to read with an expressive voice to an audience. Each reading group presented a play that they have been working on this week to the class.

There were some incredible performances and I was so impressed by those who learned their lines off by heart. In the end the class voted that Whero's group was the most entertaining.

Room 6 also wrote poems about their favourite parts of themselves and auditioned for the esteemed role of reading their work for Writer's Spot at assembly. Kaylee, Carey, Chali and Mason read their poems to the entire school this afternoon and it was spectacular! Well done guys! You can find everyone's poems on the class library shelf- they're well worth a read.

For homework this week they were given a selection of poems to read, understand and perform to the class. Talei has outdone herself this week by recording her reading of the poem "Big and Little Waves." She reads her poem so expressively I had to share it on here! Enjoy.

Visiting Author Gavin Bishop

Today we were lucky enough to listen to Gavin Bishop; author and illustrator of many well-loved children's books. He talked about his autobiography 'Piano Rock' and even shared his very old teddy-bear's autobiography too.

He explained that children's' picture books commonly have 32 pages because of the way books are printed. Gavin also read to us from a book for younger children and explained that the illustrations are purposefully blocky and bright. He then showed us a very detailed original illustration from his book 'Rats!'

His stories about writing and illustrating books were fantastic to hear and our class asked some excellent questions.
