Flick it On Film Festival

On Friday Kimberly and Craig attended the Flick it On film festival introduction at Broadgreen Intermediate School.  We met children from the other schools we will be working with.  We attended workshops about Garageband, iMovie, storyboarding and emotive photography.  It was a busy day and we have lots of information to pass on to Room 6.  This week we will begin brainstorming ideas for our movie "Pushing the Boundaries" and drawing our storyboards.

ANZAC Biscuits

Did you know that during World War 1 women sent the soldiers ANZAC biscuits?  They needed a recipe that could stay fresh for 2 months until the biscuits reached the soldiers.  Eggs in the recipe would go off.  Eggs are usually in recipes to stick the other ingredients together.  Instead of eggs the women used golden syrup.  ANZAC biscuits are easy to make and delicious!  Room 6 will be trying some for their morning tea on Tuesday.

100g butter                                       3/4 cup rolled oats
1 tablespoon golden syrup              3/4 cup plain flour
1/2 cup sugar                                   1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 cup coconut                               1 tablespoon hot water

Melt butter and sugar together in a large saucepan.  Cool.  Mix sugar, coconut, rolled oats and flour together.  Stir into saucepan.  Dissolve soda in water and mix in.  Place rounded teaspoonful on a greased tray.  Bake at 180 degrees celsius for 15 minutes, or until golden.  Makes 36.

ANZAC Day

It is ANZAC Day on Wednesday.  It is a public holiday and a day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand.  Every year on the 25th of April we remember those who fought and died at war.  Room 6 will have some homework to do about ANZAC Day this week.  The link below is "The Last Post" played on a bugle by a soldier.

Tabloid Sports Event

Birchwood School had a fabulous tabloid sports event on the last day of term 1.  The year 6 children organised and ran each activity.  Most of the colourful equipment came from Sports Tasman. Older students helped younger students to complete each activity.  It was a cooperative, fun and challenging sports event.  We all dressed in bright colours and gave a gold coin donation to raise money for Autism Awareness day.
