Swimming, Chickens and Timers

Today is the last day of swimming. It has been incredible to see the development over the last two weeks and the life guards have all commented on how well behaved Birchwood students are. Ka pai Kowhai kids!

We also had some special visitors in the classroom courtesy of Evelyn and Shane. It was very exciting to have chickens roaming about, particularly when one of the chickens pooped on the carpet. Needless to say Mr Liang was not as excited.

We have begun our unit in Time and this Thursday we investigated how long a minute actually is. The children were required to make a minute timer which proved to much harder than it sounds.

Which object will touch the ground first?

We started our science experiments looking at gravity this week. We wrote a report about what would happen if we dropped 6 different objects off the senior playground and hypothesised that the heaviest object will hit the ground first. Here's what happened:

The soccer ball hit the ground first! We talked about whether this experiment was a fair test and decided that because of the conditions and the way that the objects were dropped it was not. We gathered back inside to watch this video of a very fair test...
